About Quanstar

Quanstar is an American indie hip hop artist, filmmaker, writer, and entrepreneur whose DIY spirit has made him a standout figure in independent music. Born in Compton, California, he was introduced to hip hop culture early by his cousin and remembers the moment he truly became a “hip hop head”: seeing LL Cool J perform “Radio” in the movie Krush Groove. From there he immersed himself in the culture—breakdancing on cardboard, rapping on street corners, and writing rhymes in the margins of his school notebooks. By 16 he was known as one of the fiercest freestylers in his neighborhood and a regular winner at local battle competitions.

After relocating to Georgia to attend Clark Atlanta University, Quanstar continued to build his name on campus and in Atlanta’s hip hop scene. It was there that he met fellow MC and future business partner Evaready RAW, with whom he founded the hip hop band First Team in 2002. Seeing many of their peers struggle with creative and financial constraints on labels, Quanstar and Evaready took inspiration from artists like Ice Cube, El‑P, Atmosphere, and the Hieroglyphics crew and launched First Team Music—a multi‑faceted media company that functions as a label, tour management outfit, booking agency, and Android app development firm, with Quanstar at its creative helm.

Over the past two decades, Quanstar has released more than 15 independent projects, executive‑produced and starred in the documentary Do It!: A Documentary, written and directed several short films plus a feature film, authored the book Water From Turnips, created the comic series They Told Me This Would Sell, and hosted the online cooking show Cooking with Quanstar with his sons. A self‑described “Renaissance artist,” he uses his journey as an indie hip hop artist to set a high bar for creative independence, often sharing his experiences through his blog Indie Hip Hop 101. Today Quanstar remains a leading voice in underground hip hop, blending wordplay, storytelling, and entrepreneurial drive to push the boundaries of art and create more opportunities for independent creators.
